David Epstein Summer Sea Term Films, 1966-1980

Content Description

This collection consists of 12 reels of film (all Super 8 or 8mm) dated from the 1960s-1980 depicting summer sea terms on the Maritime College training ships Empire State IV (training ship from 1959-1973) and the Empire State V (training ship from 1973 - 1990). Footage shows training drills, oceanography experiments, and leisure activities on the ships and at international ports.

The collection documents the career and life of Frederick S. McMurray (1879-1958), beginning with his training at the New York Nautical School (now the SUNY Maritime College) on the Schoolship "St. Mary's" through his years as an instructor at the New York Nautical School and his service with the United States Navy.

Scope and Contents

The Howard L. Humphries papers span the dates of 1936 -2001, with the bulk of the items from the late 1950’s-the mid 1970’s. The collection contains photographs, correspondence, and printed materials. The majority of the correspondence pertains to the Alumni Association, of which Howard L. Humphries was president from 1974-1975. The Centennial Anniversary of the school was celebrated in 1974 and a large majority of correspondence is associated with the Centennial Ball.

Contents of Collection

The collection contains ninety-seven documents, eighty-nine of which are Certificates of Discharge issued by the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation of the United States Coast Guard during the period from 1939 to 1980. Ports mentioned include New York, Baltimore and Houston. Among the names of ships are the STEEL SURVEYOR and the STEEL AGE. The remaining documents consists of other types of certificates and licenses related to Tate's career.
