Scope and Contents

The Howard L. Humphries papers span the dates of 1936 -2001, with the bulk of the items from the late 1950’s-the mid 1970’s. The collection contains photographs, correspondence, and printed materials. The majority of the correspondence pertains to the Alumni Association, of which Howard L. Humphries was president from 1974-1975. The Centennial Anniversary of the school was celebrated in 1974 and a large majority of correspondence is associated with the Centennial Ball.

Biographical / Historical

Howard L. Humphries was a Cadet Chief Engineer and honor graduate of the class 1938 of the Maritime College. He saw active duty in the U.S. Navy during WWII serving in the Atlantic, South Pacific, Asiatic, and Mediterranean and participated in the invasion of Japan and Okinawa. Humphries retired from the Navy in 1961 with the rank of Commander. He founded Ocean Machinery Corporation in 1950 and served as President until retiring in 1986. During that time Humphries was president of the Maritime College Alumni Association from 1974-1975 and was heavily involved in planning the Centennial Celebrations. Humphries was active in the Alumni Association, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Reserve Officers Association, and Naval Reserve Association.

The Howard L. Humphries papers span from 1936-2001 and are arranged in four series: Personal papers and correspondence, SUNY Maritime Alumni Association: Papers of the President, Alumni Bulletin, and The Porthole. The collection is contained in one box and arranged in the order it was received with the exception of the Alumni Bulletin and The Porthole which are filed chronologically in folders.

The Howard L. Humphries papers are a gift from Dr. Edythe Humphries in honor of her father.
