The collection documents the life and career of Alexander Paul (1883-1956), a 1901 graduate of the New York Nautical (now SUNY Maritime College) St. Mary's whose maritime career culminated as an Inspector of Marine Vessels. Materials include a personal log book/diary with newspaper clippings and photographs, correspondence, documents related to Paul's career, and photographs.

In this interview Captain Hugh Stephens speaks of his time as a merchant mariner during World War II working on liberty transport ships, his experiences during his career after the war, how he got into being a nautical educator, and comparing cadets from his time to cadets nowadays.

Content Description

This collection consists of 12 reels of film (all Super 8 or 8mm) dated from the 1960s-1980 depicting summer sea terms on the Maritime College training ships Empire State IV (training ship from 1959-1973) and the Empire State V (training ship from 1973 - 1990). Footage shows training drills, oceanography experiments, and leisure activities on the ships and at international ports.

Scope and Contents The Empire State I was used by the New York State Merchant Marine Academy (now SUNY Maritime College) as its training ship from 1931 until 1941. The ship was used to train young men for careers in the Merchant Marines and the Naval Reserves. The collection consists of documents, diaries, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, artifacts and ephemera.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of the logbooks from the U.S.S Newport, one of the schoolships used by the New York Nautical School (now SUNY Maritime College) to train young men for the merchant marines and the naval reserves. A ship’s logbook is a daily record of the ship’s course, speed and location. Navigational, piloting and other notable events occurring in and around the ship are also recorded in a ship’s logbook.
