Scope and Contents
This series is comprised of correspondence sent to Hendrickson while he was a student on the New York Nautical Schoolship St. Mary's (1902-1903) and in the two year period after he gradauated. Letters were addressed to Hendrickson’s home in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens (then known simply as Springfield) or to overeseas ports in care of the St. Mary's. Correspondents included classmates from the St. Mary's, friends from his home neighborhood, and friends he made while on shore leave at port-of-call.
As part of the original 1999 processing, the archivist transcribed a sentence from each item “to try to convey some of its tone… All spellings are as found in the text, and the only changes provided on occasion is an added punctuation mark if needed.” Click each letter title to read the transcribed excerpt.

I would like to see her load here and go to the States, then we would have a nice light cargo and not ship any water over our Decks". "While you are getting fat I am getting thin. I believe I lost about five pounds. How can a fellow get fat on flour and water warmed up in a little grizzle, that’s about all we get to eat"
