In the interview Phyl talks about his life leading up to his Maritime career, his time spent at the New York Maritime Academy from the Summer of 1944 to his graduation in October 1946, the people he knew while he was at the Academy, his time on the training ship USMSTS American Pilot (also known as Empire State I), and the differences between today's mariners and mariners in the 1940s.

This collection primarly contains commencement programs, Awards Dinner programs, and invitations to the Award Dinner. Other materials include copies of commencement speaker speeches, program schedules, and college memos concerning commencement. Missing years from this collection include 1951, 2002-2003, 2015-2016, and 2018-2019.

The photographs depict student activities, academics, clubs and athletics; alumni; staff/faculty; presidents; buildings and spaces on campus; the reconstruction and dedication of Fort Schuyler in the 1930s; aerial views; military formations; special events and commencement ceremonies; and life aboard the early schoolships St. Mary's (1875-1908) and Newport (1907 - 1931) as well as subsequent training ships Empire State I through Empire State VI.

Contents of Collection The SUNY Maritime College Student Files consist of individual files that include applications for admission, school transcripts, physical examination reports, and various types of correspondence. Some files contain photographs of the students as well as demerit records.
