Scope and Contents The Empire State I was used by the New York State Merchant Marine Academy (now SUNY Maritime College) as its training ship from 1931 until 1941. The ship was used to train young men for careers in the Merchant Marines and the Naval Reserves. The goal of the Maritime Memory Oral History Project is to foster understanding of life at the Maritime College through recording the memories and stories of its graduates and other affiliated peoples. The collection contains oral interviews of numerous faculty and alumni of SUNY Maritime college.

In the interview Phyl talks about his life leading up to his Maritime career, his time spent at the New York Maritime Academy from the Summer of 1944 to his graduation in October 1946, the people he knew while he was at the Academy, his time on the training ship USMSTS American Pilot (also known as Empire State I), and the differences between today's mariners and mariners in the 1940s.

Contents of Collection The Phylipp Dilloway Papers contain materials from his time at sea on the training ship USMSTS American Pilot (also known as the Empire State I), his later career as a consultant for Dunlap & Associates, research materials associated with his book "Class of October 1946", and other materials from his career and personal life. These materials include correspondences, photographs, reports, a journal he kept when at sea, two bridge coats he wore while at sea, and other artifacts....

Contents of Collection Collection consists of college catalogs/bulletins for SUNY Maritime College from 1929 through 2003. Catalogs/Bulletins have not been located for the years 1874-1928 (it's possible they may not have been published at that time). Contents of Collection The SUNY Maritime College Student Files consist of individual files that include applications for admission, school transcripts, physical examination reports, and various types of correspondence. Some files contain photographs of the students as well as demerit records. The practice of keeping individual files for each student seems to have started around 1925 therefore files for students who graduated prior to that date are inconsistent and contain significantly less documentation. Contents of Collection This collection consists of yearbooks published for the graduating classes of SUNY Maritime College from 1922 through 2016. Yearbooks were not published prior to 1922 nor from 1924-1938. In 1951 there was no graduating class and yearbooks have not been located for the years 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005 (it's possible they may not have been published those years).A typical yearbook includes a listing of that year's graduating class (usually with photographs), as well as highlights...
