The collection documents the life and career of Alexander Paul (1883-1956), a 1901 graduate of the New York Nautical (now SUNY Maritime College) St. Mary's whose maritime career culminated as an Inspector of Marine Vessels. This collection consists of 12 reels of film (all Super 8 or 8mm) dated from the 1960s-1980 depicting summer sea terms on the Maritime College training ships Empire State IV (training ship from 1959-1973) and the Empire State V (training ship from 1973 - 1990). Footage shows training drills, oceanography experiments, and leisure activities on the ships and at international ports.
