Abstract

Tode was a 1912 graduate of New York Nautical School (now SUNY Maritime College), and later served as an instructor and Chief Engineer at the school. He was known for his advocacy of a strong Merchant Marine, especially through his leadership of the Propeller Club, which he built into an influential national organization. Materials include correspondence, publications, diary extracts, clippings, photographs, medals, and other career related documents.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of correspondence from 1952, when Durgin was Superintendent of the Maritime College. There are many personal items as well as letters pertaining to the College.

Content Description This collection provides an intimate picture of Cecil Northrop's life at sea in the 1920s as a cadet in traning and merchant mariner. Northrop kept extensive diaries (handwritten and typed) where he recorded his impressions of life aboard the ship, foreign ports visited, people he met on his travels, and relationships with friends, family, and love interests. Scope and Contents This collection consists of the logbooks from the U.S.S Empire State one of the training ships used by the New York State Nautical School (now SUNY Maritime College) to train young men for the merchant marines and the naval reserves. Scope and Contents

The Empire State III was used by the New York State Merchant Marine Academy (now SUNY Maritime College) as its training ship from 1956 until 1959. The ship was used to train young men for careers in the Merchant Marines and the Naval Reserves. Materials in this collection largely consist of ship plans, administrative documents, cruise itineraries, and Captain Alfred Olivet's personal and professional correspondence during cruise.

Contents of Collection

The collection contains ninety-seven documents, eighty-nine of which are Certificates of Discharge issued by the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation of the United States Coast Guard during the period from 1939 to 1980. Ports mentioned include New York, Baltimore and Houston. Among the names of ships are the STEEL SURVEYOR and the STEEL AGE. The remaining documents consists of other types of certificates and licenses related to Tate's career.
