Scope and Contents This collection consists of the logbooks from the U.S.S Empire State one of the training ships used by the New York State Nautical School (now SUNY Maritime College) to train young men for the merchant marines and the naval reserves. A ship’s logbook is a daily record of the ship’s course, speed and location. Navigational, piloting and other notable events occurring in and around the ship are also recorded in a ship’s logbook. Scope and Contents The Empire State I was used by the New York State Merchant Marine Academy (now SUNY Maritime College) as its training ship from 1931 until 1941. The ship was used to train young men for careers in the Merchant Marines and the Naval Reserves. In the interview Phyl talks about his life leading up to his Maritime career, his time spent at the New York Maritime Academy from the Summer of 1944 to his graduation in October 1946, the people he knew while he was at the Academy, his time on the training ship USMSTS American Pilot (also known as Empire State I), and the differences between today's mariners and mariners in the 1940s.
