Series II: Technical Specifications, 1918-1920
Scope and Contents
This series contains 19 technical specifications for ships and their parts in paperbound notebooks ranging from eight to 75 pages. The ship specifications are mostly for steamships designed to carry freight or oil, with one steel car float for railroad cars. Other specifications are for ships' boilers and engines.
Ten of the specifications were produced by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Ltd. Five others were produced by the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, and the remaining specification was produced by the American Shipbuilding Company.

Arrangement of Materials
The nineteen technical specifications remain in the order in which Seward arranged them. Each item bears a description on the cover, given by the company that produced them, indicating the type of vessel or equipment, the builder, and the date when the specifications were produced.
The legacy finding aid states that Seward may have intended to place some of these items in his Subject Files (Series III), as suggested by handwritten notes (presumably in his handwriting) on Specifications 15, 17, and 19. 15 and 17 are labeled "Boilers" and 19 is labeled "Marine Engines," both of which are subject files present in the collection.
