Series I: Correspondence, 1890-1956
Scope and Contents
This series comprises McMurray's personal and professional correspondence, beginning with his youth and ending two years prior to his death. Letters refer to episodes in his maritime career, from his training voyages aboard the Schoolships "St. Mary's" (1894-96) and "St. David" (1897) through oceanographic research with the Magnetic Survey Yacht "Carnegie" (1910-12), his work with the Isthmanian Steamship Lines (1921-1930), and his military service during the Spanish-American War (1898) and World War I (1916-1919). Among the professional associates with whom he corresponded are fellow New York Nautical School (now SUNY Maritime College) alumni Alexander Paul and Louis E. Weickum, and Calvin T. Durgin, who had been Superintendent of SUNY Maritime College from 1952 to 1959.
