Scope and Contents

The Moore- McCormack Lines Scrapbook Collection contains of 63 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from various national and international newspapers that focus on the history of the Moore-McCormack Lines from 1929 to 1970. Such newspapers include The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and The Baltimore Morning Sun. Clippings also include journal and magazine articles from various titles such as the Marine Journal and Nautical Gazette. Many of the clippings were sent upon request by the Moore-McCormack Lines office in Manhattan from the Romeike and Burrelles’ Press Clipping Bureaus. The clippings cover a wide range of topics including the Company’s plans and expansion, service line recognition and commendations, shipping agreements between ports, ship departure details and passenger lists, shipment details, activities during the World Wars, and advertisements for the Company’s shipping lines. Notable vessels and shipping lines mentioned throughout the clippings include the Scanpenn, Scanmail, Scanstates, Scanyork, and the American Scantic Line. Notable individuals mentioned include founders Albert V. Moore and Emmet J. McCormack, and vice president Robert C. Lee.

Many of the clippings have pencil highlights emphasizing Moore-McCormack Lines activity as well as brief handwritten notes stating the newspaper title and date. The scrapbooks also contain newspaper clippings from countries such as Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Poland, Argentina, and Brazil.
