Biography

Phyllip Dilloway was born in Bronx, New York on October 29th, 1926. He remained in the Bronx throughout his childhood and graduated from Evander Childs High School in the summer of 1944. While he initially went to the City College of New York (CCNY), he dropped out upon his acceptance to the New York State Maritime Academy (now SUNY Maritime). He briefly worked at the NY Post Office just to pay for the books and uniforms needed to attend the Academy. In the summer of 1945 Dilloway went to sea on his first cruise aboard the American Pilot (also known as the Empire State I) as part of his merchant mariner training. Dilloway completed his second cruise aboard the training ship Empire State II and graduated from the New York State Maritime Academy in October of 1946.

After graduating, Dilloway found his first assignment at sea to be disappointing and, after seeking advice, decided to go back to CCNY to become an industry engineer and consultant. In 1947 he was assigned to a cruise down to South America, where he decided to join the Naval Reserve for the better pay. The outbreak of the Korean war interrupted his time at university, and from 1950 to 1953 Dilloway served on the USS Robert L. Wilson. After the war, he went on to get his Master's degree in Industrial Engineering at Columbia University. While still in the Naval Reserves, Dilloway obtained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander at the age of 29.

After graduating with his master's degree, Dilloway joined an industrial consulting firm named Dunlap & Associates and co-authored several maritime based reports for the government. He ended his career with a full professorship at the University of Bridgeport, and is still active with his colleagues from Bridgeport today, despite retiring from the job. Between 2000 and 2004, he compiled a biography on each of his classmates in his graduatng class at the New York State Maritime Academy and used it for the book "Class of October 1946", which he self-published in 2004.
