Biographical Note

Thomas F. Caldwell was born in 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1925 he graduated from the New York State Nautical School after 1.5 years of study and sea training as an engineering cadet aboard the Schoolship Newport. He sailed for many years with various shipping lines. He was called to active duty as a merchant mariner during World War II, sailing as Chief Engineer on the infamous Murmansk run, bringing supplies to the Russian front through Arctic seas. After the war he became a boiler inspector for various insurance companies, eventually serving as Chief Boiler Inspector for New York City. His son William followed in his footsteps, graduating from SUNY Maritime College (formerly the New York State Nautical School) in 1958. Thomas passed away at age 90 in Lake Panasoffkee, Florida, where he had lived for 29 years.

Contents of Collection From the Collection: The SUNY Maritime College Student Files consist of individual files that include applications for admission, school transcripts, physical examination reports, and various types of correspondence. Some files contain photographs of the students as well as demerit records. The practice of keeping individual files for each student seems to have started around 1925 therefore files for students who graduated prior to that date are inconsistent and contain significantly less documentation.
