Scope and Contents

The Empire State II was used by the New York State Merchant Marine Academy (now SUNY Maritime College) as its training ship from 1946 until 1956. The ship was used to train young men for careers in the Merchant Marines and the Naval Reserves. Materials in this collection largely consist of administrative documents, cruise itineraries, Captain Alfred Olivet's personal and professional correspondence during cruise, and news articles.

Contents of Collection The Phylipp Dilloway Papers contain materials from his time at sea on the training ship USMSTS American Pilot (also known as the Empire State I), his later career as a consultant for Dunlap & Associates, research materials associated with his book "Class of October 1946", and other materials from his career and personal life. These materials include correspondences, photographs, reports, a journal he kept when at sea, two bridge coats he wore while at sea, and other artifacts....
