Scope and Contents This collection consists of the logbooks from the U.S.S Empire State one of the training ships used by the New York State Nautical School (now SUNY Maritime College) to train young men for the merchant marines and the naval reserves. Abstract

The collection documents the career and life of Frederick S. McMurray (1879-1958), beginning with his training at the New York Nautical School (now the SUNY Maritime College) on the Schoolship "St. Mary's" through his years as an instructor at the New York Nautical School and his service with the United States Navy.

Contents of Collection The SUNY Maritime College Student Files consist of individual files that include applications for admission, school transcripts, physical examination reports, and various types of correspondence. Some files contain photographs of the students as well as demerit records. The practice of keeping individual files for each student seems to have started around 1925 therefore files for students who graduated prior to that date are inconsistent and contain significantly less documentation.
