Record of Graduates, 1899 - 1903
Scope and Contents
This register is a ledger where statistics were recorded for the graduates of the New York Nautical School (now SUNY Maritime College). The register lists the student’s full name, entry number, date of admission, and date of graduation, as well as grades for overall school course, sail handling, steering, use of lead, activity aloft, navigation, deportment, palm and needle, and later practical seamanship, running lights, and engineering. Data includes information on the boys’ age at admission, height, weight, and chest measurement, hair color, and eye color. Some records also include transfer information for vessels, report of Master, and general remarks.

Conditions Governing Access
Appointments to examine materials must be made in advance. Please e-mail library@sunymaritime.edu for more information or to schedule an appointment.
For institutional records, the library follows the “72 year rule” used by the U.S. government for census records, meaning that we will not release records with personal information about individuals for 72 years from the record date. Additionally record will be reviewed for compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which states that student records must be restricted until an individual is deceased, before being released.
